Foamex debuts 3 foams

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 19, 2006

Foam supplier Foamex is introducing three new foams that it says offer superior comfort and support.

The foams, Venus, Aerus and Energia, debuted at this month's International Sleep Products Assn. Expo in San Antonio. Two are in the fast-growing visco-elastic foam arena, while the third combines high resilience and shape-conforming properties.

Andrew Thompson, executive vice president of foam and technical products, said the foams were well accepted by bedding producers at the ISPA show.

"The market continues to recognize innovation," Thompson said. "Mattress producers are reaching higher price points. We have to bring performance with our new products."

The new foams are produced with Foamex's proprietary Variable Pressure Foaming technology which, according to the company, produces high-performing products that are superior to standard foams.

Venus is an eight-pound visco-elastic foam designed for use as a comfort layer in high-end beds. Its open-cell structure creates an airflow that makes it cooler than other premium visco foams, Foamex said. The company said it is the first eight-pound visco that is commercially available nationwide.

"With Venus, we believe we are addressing the growing need for higher-end comfort visco materials while solving the need for higher air flow and heat dissipation on premium sleep surfaces," Thompson said.

"Luxury without limits" is the tag line for Venus.

Aerus is a high-density open-cell memory foam that offers cooler, luxurious and shape-conforming comfort, the company said.

"The need to minimize heat build-up in visco-elastic sleep surfaces is not new," Thompson noted. "We have used our pioneer position in reticulation technology and our extensive know-how in visco-elastic properties to solve that problem with this revolutionary material. Aerus' open-cell foam technology results in a consistently cool and comfortable rest for end users."

Designed for use as a topper material, Aerus has eight times the air flow efficiency of traditional visco foams for rapid heat and moisture dissipation, according to Foamex. "Open windows for cool comfort" is its tag line.

Energia can be used in base, core and topper applications. It is a "totally unique product" that combines high resilience and shape-conforming properties, the company said.

"Our goal with Energia is to expand the feel options we provide to our customers," said Vishal Malhotra, director of marketing and strategy for foam products. "We recognized the need for technology-based functional alternatives that support our customers' strategies to grow in the high-end segment. For the mattress manufacturer, Energia provides a wide array of new options to create products with great consumer appeal."

Designed for premium sleep systems and offered in three densities, Energia has substantially higher pressure dissipation than innerspring mattresses, particularly at key pressure points like the shoulder blades and hips, Foamex said. Energia carries the tag line, "The way mornings were meant to feel."
