Indonesia source to debut Chapin wood line in April

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, March 19, 2006

A new case goods venture based in East Java and called P.T. Millenia Furniture Inds. will offer solid-wood pieces from designer Dick Chapin.

Chapin, who designed the Heirloom Traditions by Global Furniture line, has worked with Millenia to develop two groups for the April market. Millenia also has signed a royalty agreement with Global to manufacture a dozen of Chapin's Heirloom Traditions designs.

P.T. Millenia will import furniture through its affiliate, Millenia USA, under the brand Legacy Traditions. Jack DeBonis, former Global president and CEO, said he left the company Feb. 22 and now is general manager of Millenia USA operations. A solid-wood industry veteran, DeBonis worked for Kincaid for years before joining Global.

Millenia USA will show in the former Global Furniture space in the Profit Center building, 156 S. Main St.

In addition to its own facility, four other plants in the Surabaya region will make furniture for Legacy Traditions, according to Yohanes Searjaya, managing director. A central consolidation warehouse will allow three different styles to be mixed on containers.

Searjaya said the total workforce of the plants, the distribution center and the U.S. operations, based in Hickory, N.C., exceeds 2,500.

Millenia can take raw wood through its rough mills and dry kilns and ultimately deliver finished goods to the stores, said DeBonis. That makes the company the only vertically integrated import source for solid-wood furniture, he said.

"With the financial strength of Millenia and the designs of Dick Chapin, we expect to have a major impact on the solid wood category," said DeBonis. The company is shipping to several top 100 stores, he added.

Legacy Traditions will focus primarily on bedroom groups, he said, but several collections include dining. In the line are two bedroom collections that are suitable for second homes and youth rooms.

Millenia has some promotional groups in mixed hardwoods that retail with full margins at $999 for a four-piece bedroom set. The company also has solid pine, mindy and mahogany groups that retail up to $2,499.
