New Barclay Butera line goes preppy
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 19, 2006
New York — Furniture designer Barclay Butera reinterpreted the mid-20th century zeitgeist of West Palm Beach for his first-time presentation at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show here this month.
Patterns and colors included Pucci-inspired patterns in pink and green, tropical stripes, yellow and white poppies on a light pink ground, and lime and pink toiles.
Butera attended high school in the early 1980s, when "The Preppy Handbook" was part of popular culture. He said he admires how the preppy style adopted the 1960s West Palm Beach looks exemplified by Lilly Pulitzer, whose classically tailored clothes were done in bright tropical colors and patterns.
"Everything about them is fun, vibrant and celebrates life," he said.
The designer is opening his first East Coast showroom next month at New York's D&D Building.
He said his new line for the April High Point market will feature a blue-and-white palette and animal-skin patterns.
Barclay Butera Home, based in Los Angeles, is distributed through more than 300 retailers in the United States, as well as retail and designer showrooms.
