Hickory Springs opens 1st China plant

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2006

Furniture and bedding components supplier Hickory Springs Mfg. has opened its first factory in China.

The new factory, located in the Guanlan Industrial Park section of Shenzhen, is producing recliner and sofa-sleeper mechanisms.

"The new facility expands the company's capacity by providing American-quality motion products to the Chinese market," said Ben Thayer, vice president of global components.

He said Hickory Springs has been exporting U.S.-made metal products to Europe, Mexico and Canada for years, but the expansion into the Chinese market will allow the company to capitalize on other global opportunities.

Mike Cope, a Hickory Springs veteran who most recently was manager of the Hickory metal complex, has relocated to Shenzhen to oversee the new facility.

He reports to Thayer, who remains based in Hickory.
