Pierre Deux's new looks return to retailer's roots
By Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2006
New York — Home furnishings retailer Pierre Deux is returning to its roots for spring with new upholstered furniture and fabrics celebrating the designs and colors of Provence as well as reproduction case goods from the Louis XV era, many sporting elaborate carvings and details.
In case goods, key pieces are the Belmont buffet, the Honfleur hutch and the Paris bookcase, which was inspired by a piece in a Paris bakery. All are in solid mahogany.
Nimes, a new three-seat settee, is featured as a response to consumer requests for a larger seating piece in this style
An important part of the new collection is an emphasis on custom work of all types — upholstery, headboards, window, bedding and table linens. It's a segment of the business "that is going through the roof," said Heather Ryan, vice president of sales and marketing.
With the new collection, the retailer is allocating more display space to its custom program and has a custom specialist in the store to help customers.
"Business is strong. We're ahead in double digits," Ryan said.
Reds, yellows and blues interpreted from Indian dyes and designs of the 17th century are featured in a new fabric collection made in France. The fabrics are translated onto furniture, as well as window coverings, decorative pillows, accessories and quilts.
A highlight is the introduction of hand-embroidered pillows from Jean Francois Lesage of Paris. Pierre Deux is featuring a number of designs derived from its Rivoli design as well as whimsical interpretations of decorative objects.
The retailer will open two new locations this spring: in New York at the Decoration and Design Center, 979 Third Ave., and in the International Design Center in Estero, Fla. Each will be about 2,500 square feet and will be the template for future Pierre Deux stores, Ryan said. Both interior designers and consumers will be able to use each facility.
The new units will bring the U.S. store count to 17 plus an outlet. The company also has a store in Tokyo.
