Carefully Crafted

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2006

This category could be called "crewel intentions" because there are so many examples of that embroidery that will be shown at the April market. Embroidery is just one example of fabrics that evoke a sense of hand crafting, which is part of the trend to feminine styling. But these are not sissy looks — rather they have elements that show deliberate choices based on beautiful color or hand or meaningful artistry. This page illustrates some of the lovely crewel work, as well as a grandly scaled print and even a creative Western look.

A. NIPKOW & KOBELT AT HARDEN FURNITURE

Rustic's highly textured silk decorated with wool crewel stitching is showcased on a carved chair and decorative pillows.

B. ARTURO POZZI AT PEARSON

The incredible 72-inch vertical repeat of rayon print Palmason, originally designed for drapery, was specially placed and engineered for Pearson's best-selling No. 709 chair.

C. BARTSON FABRICS AT MICHAEL THOMAS

An intricately carved Louis XVI settee is the showcase for Batik, a rayon and polyester fabric that spends an additional two weeks in Italy for finishing, where it is tie-dyed by hand and then crinkled to create this unmistakably rich look.

D. CIRCA 1801, C&A, FABRICUT, PORTFOLIO, BRAEMORE AT C.R. LAINE

A well-edited assortment from five sources creates the very feminine Jessica McClintock aesthetic in this grouping that debuts this month. These patterns are, from left: Circa 1801, Galant; C&A, Skylar; Fabricut Highlight; Portfolio Textiles Sanctuary; Braemore Monjetto; and Circa 1801, Kizar.

E. HAFNER AT MARSHFIELD FURNITURE

Hand-crafted tools of the cowboy's trade are showcased on Winchester, an exclusively licensed tapestry of polyester, cotton and olefin that covers the Winchester frame designed by Susan Sheil.

F. MORGAN FABRICS AT STANFORD FURNITURE

Inch, a pure cotton velvet of deep forest green embellished with crewel embroidery, is the choice for the Model 1650 Tiffany Falls chair and a large bench ottoman debuting this market.

G. RICHLOOM FABRICS AT LA-Z-BOY

The fresh white ground and spring colors of cotton and polyester Westbourke cover a traditional camelback sofa.

H. SUNBURY TEXTILE MILLS AT NORWALK

A reverse camelback sofa sports the red needlepoint pattern of Heritage Way, a woven fabric of cotton, acrylic, polyester and rayon.

I. TEXTILE FABRIC ASSOCIATES AT NORWALK

The lush floral and dramatic black ground of All Dolled Up is the perfect choice for an armless contemporary accent chair. Rayon and polyester.

J. TIETEX INTERIORS AT NORWALK

Pinata's spicy salsa color will make a hot statement on new upholstery. The "extreme" texture is a blend of acrylic, polyester, rayon and olefin.
