Contemporary Shaping

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2006

Circles are still "going around" in the upholstered furniture universe where they continue to be a favorite theme, as well as elegantly geometric boxes and squares. This page highlights those modern motifs, along with technology-driven performance covers, and crisp, bright colors that take classics like skins and faux leathers to the leading edge of contemporary style for spring market introductions.

A. SUNBURY TEXTILE MILLS AT SAM MOORE

Contemporary upholstery gets a beneficial spin from the fresh green color of Circularity, featuring delicate rings linked with twisted yarns of warm brown. Polyester, rayon and cotton.

B. CIRCA 1801/DOBLIN AT BURTON JAMES

Jester, a harlequin pattern, in caramel, chocolate and spice tones of rayon and Egyptian mercerized cotton, will warm up a metropolitan-style contemporary sectional debuting at market.

C. CULP AT LA-Z-BOY

Top Gun, a polyester and acrylic fabric, will bring plenty of action to a motion sofa at the upcoming market.

D KRAVET AT VANGUARD FURNITURE

The elegant velvet blocks of Vincent provide a finishing jewelry touch for decorative toss pillows on a new rosewood-bordered shelter sofa with deco styling.

E. MERRIMAC, HIGHCRAFT AND DEVI AT HEKMAN/WOODMARK

A cool contemporary palette of pale blue and brown in a polyester microfiber velvet from Merrimac, a polyester and rayon chenille skin from Highcraft, and classic silks from Devi share the spotlight on a transitional high-low frame sofa.

F. P/KAUFMANN AT SAM MOORE FURNITURE

The close-to-nature animal skin pattern of woven acrylic and polyester Panthera takes a cool contemporary approach in this neutral palette debuting on upholstery at the spring furniture market.

G. QUAKER FABRIC AT BRAXTON CULLER

Zebraskin, a polyester, cotton and linen woven in a lighthearted lime color, is showcased on a new transitional wicker furniture collection.

H. ULTRAFABRICS AT SAM MOORE

Butter-soft faux leather Brisa, which breathes like fabric, is a high-performance cover for transitionally styled chairs debuting this market.

I. VALTEKZ AT VANGUARD

Tecknical Canvas, the same high-performance faux leather used for Louis Vuitton handbags, covers hourglass-shaped ottomans debuting at the spring market.

J. WAVERLY AT KING HICKORY

The stylized floral of Chrysanthemums, a boucle chenille of acrylic and polyester, dresses a casual, transitional skirted frame.
