A few suggestions for your High Point to-do list
Susan M. Andrews, Fabric Editor -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2006
You have your own agenda when you come to High Point for market, of course, but it can't all be about buying, selling and marketing. So I'd like to propose a few additions to your to-do list while you're in town later this month for the spring show.
-
Reward a good deed. Give Tom Mitchell and Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. a big cheer for razing the unsightly old icehouse on the corner of Kivett and Lindsay to create 500 free buyer parking spaces. MMPI has a big stake in High Point, with 2.2 million square feet of showroom space in six buildings, and offering additional free parking for buyers is a great way to give back to the industry. Maybe it will start a trend.
-
Touch base with everybody who's anybody. Don't miss Furniture/Today's All-Industry party on Wednesday evening, April 26, at Noble's. By Wednesday evening, you'll probably have been working hard for a few days, so you'll need our party to rejuvenate your attitude and remind you of why you're in this business.
-
Donate to a good cause. Marty Libowsky, a sales rep for Powell and Progressive, founded 100 Angels to raise funds for good causes on behalf of the furniture industry. Bring your checkbook to help out with his latest big idea — providing telephone calling cards for members of the military serving in Iraq. Marty can tell you all about it, and he can also tell you a cute story about when he nearly got court-martialed in Vietnam for calling his parents on their anniversary.
-
Party night after night. If you missed the Neville Brothers concert sponsored by the Market Authority at the October market, you probably heard about it. Well, this market the authority is offering four nights of entertainment and free food on the plaza in front of Showplace — Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At press time, they hadn't announced the musical headliners, but you should start hoping for mild spring evenings.
-
Get updated on the trends. For the first time, MMPI is offering a runway-style fashion show featuring the latest seating, dining, lighting and accessories. You'll get an entertaining idea of the latest trends and can stay for cocktails, food and music. Be there Saturday, April 29, in the courtyard at Market Square.
I have one more suggestion, but this is something to do now: take advantage of the Web sites provided by the Market Authority (www.homefurnishingsmarket.org) and the International Home Furnishings Center (www.ihfc.com).
If you aren't in the habit of checking out these sites, log on and noodle around. You may be surprised by how much help they can be.
Travel safely. See you at market.
