Swift Galey selling spinning operation

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 2, 2006

Denim specialist Swift Galey is selling its yarn-spinning operation here to Frontier Spinning Mills of Sanford, N.C.

John Heldrich, president and CEO of Atlanta-based Swift Galey, said the four-story, 800,000-square-foot Columbus mill, which dates to 1883, costs too much to operate in the face of imports. The company has another facility nearby that employs about 700 people in dyeing and finishing of fabrics.

The sale will eliminate about 200 jobs when the transition is complete in about two months.

Swift Galey expanded its global presence in 2005 through two joint ventures with Lucky Textile Group, a Chinese weaving, dyeing, finishing and printing company.
