Wal-Mart recalls wooden rockers
Defective runners causing injuries
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 9, 2006
Washington — Three wooden rocking chairs sold by Wal-Mart since spring 2004 have been voluntarily recalled by the giant retailer.
The recall, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, stemmed from too much curvature on the chairs' runners, which can cause them to tip over, according to the CPSC.
The agency said Wal-Mart has received 55 incident reports, which included 45 injuries. Many of the injuries occurred on display models in Wal-Mart stores, including one case in which a pregnant woman began having contractions after a sitting in a display chair that tipped over backwards.
Other injuries included a leg cut requiring 16 stitches, a slight concussion, fractured ribs, a pinched nerve and a shoulder joint tear, according to CPSC.
Specific models being recalled are the Mainstays loveseat rocker, model IT-13380, and two Mainstays porch rockers, models IT-13379 and IT-13270.
The CPSC said consumers should immediately stop using the chairs and return them to Wal-Mart for a full refund.
The loveseat rocker was sold for about $100 between May 2004 and September 2005, while the porch rockers sold for about $50 between April 2004 and March 2006.
They were produced in China and Indonesia.
