Transit hub honors market chief

High Point — Judy Mendenhall may be retiring as president of High Point's Market Authority, but her name will remain part of the local landscape.
The High Point City Council has voted to name the furniture market's transportation terminal Mendenhall Station in her honor.
The terminal, which covers a one-block section of Commerce Avenue between Hamilton and Wrenn streets, was developed largely through federal grants obtained during Mendenhall's tenure, said High Point Mayor Becky Smothers.
"Naming the transportation center for her is highly appropriate, since her vision and leadership guided and developed the facility," Smothers said. "The City Council is pleased to be able to recognize Judy's many contributions to her community, and particularly her tenure as first president of the Market Authority."
Mendenhall, who has headed the group since its inception in 2001, will retire at the end of April. The Market Authority board recently hired Brian Casey, a veteran trade show executive, as her replacement.
The board also announced that it had made a $5,000 contribution on Mendenhall's behalf to Open Door Ministries, a High Point homeless shelter.
"I am surprised and honored," Mendenhall said. "I am very proud of what we have accomplished in the past five years through the hard work of my exceptional staff and with the outstanding support of so many members of this community."
