Caye to open upholstered furniture plant in North Carolina

Will invest $1.4 million, create 130 jobs

Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, September 11, 2009

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Upholstery manufacturer and case goods importer Caye Home Furnishings plans to invest $1.4 million in a plant here to manufacture upholstered furniture.

Wayne Stewart, Caye's chief financial officer, said the company will begin renovating the 200,000-square-foot plant, formerly a Broyhill facility, on Monday and expects to be shipping by the end of September.

He said the company needs the facility to serve a growing customer base in the Northeast.

The company also has an 80,000-square-foot plant in Star, N.C., just south of Greensboro, that it purchased a year ago, but that facility has been running over capacity for six months, Stewart said.

The company, whose brands include Stratford and Stratolounger, has its main manufacturing plant in Mississippi and also operates one facility in Florida and two in China.

The plant here will employ about 130 people over the next three years, and can add more as the economy improves, Stewart said.

Caye Home Furnishings has a 60-year history, tracing its origin back to Futorian, the company credited with bringing modern upholstery manufacturing to northeast Mississippi.
