MicroD opens larger office, celebrates 20th anniversary

HICKORY, N.C. — Furniture retail technology source MicroD celebrated its 20th anniversary last week with the opening of a new, expanded office here.
MicroD executives Manoj Nigam, left, Mona Nigam, Mary Martell and Ron Martell, along with Hickory, N.C. Mayor Rudy Wright, cut the ribbon on MicroD’s new 7,800-square-foot headquarters in Hickory.
Civic and industry leaders were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 7,800-square-foot facility at 1985 Tate Boulevard, down the street from where the company got its start.
MicroD opened Hickory, N.C., in 1993 with four people on staff and less than 1,000 square feet of office space. Now with nearly 60 employees, its Hickory office continues to serve as the base for many of its product development, sales, customer support, and digital catalog creation services.
The company also fields a global staff of nearly 100, with additional offices in Charlotte, N.C., India and the Czech Republic.
"We are grateful to our customers and colleagues that have enabled these 20 years of growth," MicroD CEO and President Manoj Nigam said in a release.
"We have proudly maintained an exclusive focus on the home furnishings industry," he said, adding that the company continues to invest, innovate and expand "in response to strong demand for the latest tools and technologies."
MicroD said it has more than 85% of the Top 100 furniture stores and more than 650 vendors using its products.
In its early days, the company pioneered the use of computers for desktop product presentations. As the Internet gained popularity, MicroD was the first to bring furniture presentation online with its ePreVue solution, according to a release.
In 2000, it launched its Internet-based technology that allows computer-generated draping of upholstery fabrics on frames for visual merchandising and customization applications.
After merging with business-to-business software and services company Exim Technologies in 2003, the company made a commitment to develop for the Web, resulting in the integration of electronic data interchange and advancements in online furniture merchandising tools.
In 2009, MicroD unveiled its ePiphany platform, billed as the first fully integrated merchandising and marketing solution with product presentation, room planning, website development and hosting, and ecommerce capabilities.
Nigam said combining MicroD's draping and presentation tools with Exim's business-to-business transaction capabilities "gave the industry the tools to needed to truly embrace customers on the Internet."
He added that in addition to continuously improving its ecommerce tools, MicroD is working on mobile and 3D presentation technologies that allow its customers to stay ahead of consumers and their growing "expectations for a faster and more engaging experience."
He said all ePiphany websites are now mobile-optimized so consumers can shop from their smartphones. After launching its iPreVue App last year, MicroD is continuing to work to make more presentation and sales tools available for mobile devices such as iPads.
"Over our history, we have seen tremendous change in consumer expectations to what now mandates faster and more convenient interaction than ever before," Nigam said. "In order to keep our customers ahead of the curve, we believe that we must address these issues at once because they are all needed to thrive in today's multichannel business environment."
