AHFA elects Bassett chairman, honors Toms

In addition to introducing a slate of new officers, the AHFA also presented its Distinguished Service Award to a former chairman of the association, Paul Toms Jr. of Hooker Furniture.
Serving with Bassett as AHFA officers next year will be George Revington, CEO of Home Meridian International, as first vice chairman and Kevin Sauder, president and CEO of Sauder Woodworking, as second vice chairman. Ralph Scozzafava, chairman and CEO of Furniture Brands International, will move to immediate past chairman of the board.
The new officers will assume their posts Jan. 1.
Executives newly elected to three-year terms on the board include Roger Bland, Southern Motion; Andy Bray, Vanguard Furniture; Gat Caperton, Gat Creek; Doug Collier, La-Z-Boy; Jeff Coo
In honoring Toms, the AHFA cited the Hooker Furniture CEO's leadership of his company, his contributions to improving the quality of life and education in his community, and his significant impact in the home furnishings industry.
Toms, grandson of Hooker Furniture founder Clyde Hooker Sr., pursued a career in business and finance before stepping in as the third generation to lead the Martinsville, Va.-based furniture manufacturer.
He chaired the AHFA in 2007 and was chairman of the High Point Market Authority from 2003 to 2006. He also was on the board of trustees at High Point University and was a director of the Harvest Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing challenges in health, education and community vitality in Martinsville and Henry County, Va.
