Venice, Italy — Upscale Italian fabric mill and distributor Rubelli has acquired Donghia Inc., an American designer and distributor of upscale furniture, fabrics and interior accessories.
The acquisition, the largest-ever investment by Rubelli, strengthens the company's position in the luxury furniture sector by combining its already broad range with more contemporary offerings. The company expects the acquisition to double revenues, which were about 40 million euros in 2004.
The prestigious family-operated Rubelli, which has been producing fabric for more than 150 years, has a vertical production system with its own mill near Como, Italy. The company produces luxury fabrics for both the residential and the contract sector, and distributes them through 13 Rubelli showrooms and 20 partner showrooms in the United States, as well as through agents and distributors around the world.
Donghia, founded in 1968 by Italian-American interior designer Angelo Donghia, designs and produces luxury furniture, textiles, lighting, wall coverings and trim. Its revenues in 2004 were about $42 million, up 16% over the year before. The Donghia Group operates almost exclusively in the United States, where it generates about 90% of its revenue.
