Baily Street, Southern Living part ways

By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, October 5, 2009

Accent furniture specialist Bailey Street Holding Co. and Southern Living magazine have parted ways, dropping a licensing agreement for a line of upholstered chairs.

But the licensed Southern Living Home collection with Chromcraft Revington is expanding, with two new bedroom and dining room collections and a 10-piece casual transitional dining set to be introduced at this month's High Point Market.

Bailey Street and Southern Living had announced a licensing agreement in June 2008, but by this July had decided not to continue it.

Southern Living Executive Editor Derick Belden said officials with the magazine decided it made more sense to work with fewer and larger brand partners, such as Chromcraft Revington.

"We are in the process of structuring a program to build off our successes and build a robust collection of affordably priced product," he said. "Fewer and larger partners at this time will help us get where we want to go over the short term."

Bailey Street CEO Jim Berk said the agreement was conceived as a multi-year deal and resulted in a line that was initially well received in the marketplace. While he said the two companies continue to have a good relationship, he said the magazine underwent changes in personnel and business strategy that resulted in the decision to part ways.

Bailey Street will continue with its successful Couture Covers slipcover program. Since its launch in July 2007, that program has grown from one chair and 12 covers to 14 accent chairs and benches and 200 cover selections.

The company also is developing a line of fabrics for accent chair pillows. Like Couture Covers, the fabrics are interchangeable on the pillows.
