New Houston supermarket carries Ashley furniture
So do all 43 Kroger Marketplaces nationwide
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, October 9, 2009
HOUSTON — A Kroger Marketplace store that recently opened in the Houston suburb of Richmond includes a 2,400-square-foot Ashley furniture display, according to Kroger officials.
The Ashley products, which include upholstery, dining room and occasional pieces, are a key part of the Marketplace store format, which also has items such bed and bath products, jewelry and toys in addition to the traditional supermarket, the company said.
The new store is 125,000 square feet, about one-quarter of which is devoted to products for the home that typically aren't found in supermarkets.
"The new Kroger Marketplace is a destination shopping experience whether you live near or far from the store," said Bill Breetz, president of Kroger's southwest division.
The store is the first Marketplace store in Texas and the 43rd nationwide. All Marketplace stores carry Ashley furniture, according to a company spokeswoman.

These past 2 years of economic downturn now have many in the industry going over just what is will take to get traffic and sales volume back.IMHO one of the reasons that sales fell off is that far too retailers were selling furniture that upon first glance looked good but upon examination (and for many customers at the time of delivery ) was really very poor quality. Ashley exemplifies this. Do furniture buyers think they build the business by offering "flash on trash?" Not for long. The public now demands quality at every price level. Ignore this at your own peril.

Great! Now when you are krogering for pork chops you pick up some dreck Ashley. There's no bottom to this. Retailers need to wake up-fast.

I'm amazed any furniture retailer would continued to carry and sell Ashley.
Ashley has done nothing but hurt the furniture industry
over the last 5-years.
If retailers would wake up and stop selling Ashley,
the furniture industry as a whole would be stronger.

This is typical of Ashley. Invest and open an Ashley Store and be protected for ten feet or ten minutes, whichever comes first. It would take me all of 30 seconds to drop this line just like I did Stanley years ago when they pulled the same stunt.
