United Furniture to add 100 workers

Will restart Mississippi upholstery plant

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 13, 2009

OKOLONA, Miss. — Upholstery manufacturer United Furniture plans to reactivate a former Futorian factory here and create 100 jobs.

According to a news release from the Mississippi Development Authority, refurbishment of the 575,000-square-foot building will be aided by a $1.1 million grant from the MDA and $290,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Both grants are for infrastructure improvements and will go toward a new roof and sprinkler system for the city-owned facility.

United employs 1,400 workers at its operations here and in Amory and Hatley, Miss., and in facilities in Archdale and High Point, N.C. The company makes stationary and motion sofas and recliners.

The company has begun the hiring process, with work on the building to start later.
