Charleston Forge promotes Rick Grant to president

Art Barber remains chairman, CEO

Tom Russell -- Furniture Today, October 13, 2009

BOONE, N.C. — Metal beds, dining and accent furniture producer Charleston Forge has promoted Rick Grant, who joined the company in early May as vice president of operations, to president.

For two years before joining Charleston Forge, Grant was president and CEO of Classic Moving and Storage, a distribution arm of North Carolina-based Top 100 store chain Hendricks Furniture Group.

He joined Hendricks in 1990 as vice president of operations and was president of its Boyles Furniture stores for about four years before moving into his role with Classic Moving and Storage. Before joining Hendricks, he was vice president of operations at Fort Myers, Fla.-based Robb & Stucky.

At Charleston Forge he reports to Art Barber, who has been president, chairman and CEO. He remains chairman and CEO, and his wife, Susan, remains secretary and treasurer.

Barber said the change will allow him to focus more on product development and visiting with key accounts to learn about their product needs.

"I want to be a student of the industry and serve the needs of the industry," he said.

Grant will continue to oversee operations, along with finance and sales.

He said the Boone, N.C.-based company will remain an all-domestic producer, with the exception of some imported components, and will utilize its strengths in customization.

"The world is a little tired of a sea of brown furniture," Grant said. "They are looking for things to mix it up. It is a unique product and can be used in so many different ways."

At the High Point Market, Charleston Forge has its main showroom at 1690 English Road and also occupies space 110a in Market Square.
