Sealy, Simmons, Serta still lead bedding pack
Tempur-Pedic climbs to No. 4
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, June 18, 2006
High Point — The three largest bedding producers retain their market-leading positions, but are joined by a new member of the Big Four.
Fast-growing Tempur-Pedic has cracked that elite club, which for years consisted of Sealy, Simmons, Serta and Spring Air. Tempur-Pedic's 31.3% sales gain last year propelled the specialty sleep producer into the No. 4 position on Furniture/Today's ranking of the Top 15 U.S. bedding producers. Spring Air moves down a notch to No. 5 on the list.
Sealy, Simmons and Serta continue to occupy the top three positions on the list, which ranks bedding producers on their wholesale bedding shipments.
Once again, the market share report documents strong growth by the two leading specialty sleep players: Tempur-Pedic and Select Comfort.
Tempur-Pedic's sizzling performance last year saw that producer add $100 million in U.S. mattress sales. That increase alone is bigger than four Top 15 producers.
The other specialty sleep power — Select Comfort — also enjoyed another strong year. Select Comfort's wholesale bedding shipments grew 22.8% last year, to $323 million. That puts the airbed producer, which also has its own retail stores, within reach of Spring Air.
Collectively, Sealy, Simmons, Serta, Tempur-Pedic, Spring Air and Select Comfort — the Super Six of bedding — account for nearly two-thirds of all mattress shipments, according to the Furniture/Today report.
This year's report lists the wholesale shipments for the 15 largest U.S. bedding producers, and reveals that the majority of those players enjoyed growth years in 2005. Only majors Simmons and Spring Air suffered sales declines.
Standing unchallenged at the head of the list is Sealy, which recorded total U.S. bedding shipments last year of more than $1.3 billion with its three bedding brands: Sealy, Stearns & Foster and Bassett Bedding. The Sealy brand was the pacesetter, registering a strong 14.8% sales gain. Stearns & Foster, Sealy's luxury brand, had a flat performance last year (see "Luxury," p18).
No. 2 Simmons suffered a 2% sales decline last year, and finished the year with wholesale bedding shipments of $849 million. (That figure includes the sales allowances that Simmons used to help drive business last year. When those allowances are not counted, Simmons slides into the No. 3 position, behind Serta (see "Allowances," p18).
No. 3 Serta enjoyed a year of modest growth, posting a 3.6% sales increase, with total bedding shipments of $811 million.
As previously noted, Tempur-Pedic now occupies the No. 4 spot.
Spring Air experienced a 5.6% sales decline last year, according to the market share report. Its volume dropped from $378 million to $357 million. Sales continued to decline for Spring Air's high-end Chattam & Wells brand, down 18.5%.
Select Comfort's steady growth continues to move that producer up the list. Select Comfort ranks as the nation's largest bedding retailer, but only its wholesale volume is considered on this project.
Comfort Solutions, formerly King Koil, continues to occupy the No. 7 spot. It posted a strong sales gain of 18.1%, to record shipments of $163 million.
Another stellar growth year by IBC catapults that producer into the No. 8 position. Furniture/Today estimates that IBC had wholesale bedding shipments last year of $129 million. That does not include volume that IBC generated with Thera pedic as a licensee of that group.
IBC's 33% growth rate was enough to move it just ahead of Therapedic, which is in the No. 9 position with 2005 bedding shipments estimated by Furniture/Today at $128 million, a 6.7% increase.
No. 10 on the list is Kingsdown, which posted an 11.3% sales increase to record shipments last year of $118 million, according to Furniture/Today estimates.
Englander, formerly in the No. 10 position, slides down one notch to No. 11. It enjoyed a 4% sales gain last year to achieve total shipments of $103 million, according to Furniture/Today estimates.
Restonic, with a flat performance last year, according to the newspaper's estimates, had total shipments in 2005 of $96 million. It remains in the No. 12 slot.
In the No. 13 slot is Richmond, Va.-based Symbol, a newcomer to the Top 15 list last year. Symbol had a 6.5% sales gain and total shipments in 2005 estimated at $82 million.
No. 14 is promotional powerhouse Corsicana, based in Texas. It saw its shipments increase 11.9% last year, reaching an estimated $75 million.
And Lady Americana again rounds out the Top 15 list, with shipments last year estimated at $67 million, a 1.5% increase.
