Sealy, Simmons, Serta still lead bedding pack

Tempur-Pedic climbs to No. 4

David Perry -- Furniture Today, June 22, 2006

HIGH POINT -- The three largest bedding producers retain their market-leading positions, but are joined by a new member of the Big Four.

Fast-growing Tempur-Pedic has cracked that elite club, which for years consisted of Sealy, Simmons, Serta and Spring Air. Tempur-Pedic’s 31.3% sales gain last year propelled the specialty sleep producer into the No. 4 position on Furniture/Today’s ranking of the Top 15 U.S. bedding producers. Spring Air moves down a notch to No. 5 on the list. Sealy, Simmons and Serta continue to occupy the top three positions on the list, which ranks bedding producers on their wholesale bedding shipments. Once again, the market share report documents strong growth by the two leading specialty sleep players: Tempur-Pedic and Select Comfort. Tempur-Pedic’s sizzling performance last year saw that producer add $100 million in U.S. mattress sales. That increase alone is bigger than four Top 15 producers.

The other specialty sleep power — Select Comfort — also enjoyed another strong year. Select Comfort’s wholesale bedding shipments grew 22.8% last year, to $323 million. That puts the airbed producer, which also has its own retail stores, within reach of Spring Air.
