Toronto summer show could be largest in years

Mississauga, Ontario — Some 35 manufacturers and importers with showrooms in and around the International Center here will take part in the Toronto Summer Furniture Show, set for Aug. 14–16.
Organized by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn., the market features the annual Retailer of the Year gala and runs in conjunction with the Canadian Gift & Tableware Assn.'s mid-year market.
The CGTA Fall Gift Show, Aug. 13–16, focuses on gifts, accessories, tabletop and similar products, and is held at the International Center and nearby Toronto Congress Center.
A significant number of Canadian furniture retailers shop for accessories at the fall CGTA show.
"This summer furniture show will help those retailers who don't always travel to the big markets in High Point and Las Vegas but need to refresh their floors with new looks from their Canadian suppliers mid-year," said Laine Reynolds, OFMA chairman and vice president of sales for Superstyle Furniture.
"Many of these retailers didn't see the upholstery and case goods introductions at High Point this past April, and that probably will be the focal point of most presentations here," he said.
With the showrooms already signed up, Reynolds said this would be the largest Toronto summer show in many years, and more exhibitors could join the ranks in coming weeks.
The three-day Toronto show will be the only furniture market held in Canada this summer. Both Market Showplace in Calgary, Alberta, typically held in late June, and the Salon de Meuble du Quebec, usually slotted for mid-September in Quebec City, are on hiatus this year.
Currently, the following International Center showrooms will be open: A.P. Inds., Artage International, Berkline Canada, Bocca Rattan, Bogdon & Gross Furniture, Cuoio Designs, Durham Furniture, El Ran, Flair Design, The Gibbard Furniture Shops, Jaymar Furniture, Korson Furniture, Marcantonio Design, Reflections Furniture, Simmons Canada Springwall Sleep Products, Statum Designs, Sunset Lamp, Via Furniture, Villageois and Vogel of Canada.
Outside showrooms are Brentwood Classics, Campio Furniture, Decor-Rest Furniture, Distinctive Designs, Edgewood Furniture, Future Chair, Kingsdown Sleep Systems, La-Z-Boy Canada, Lady Americana, Leather Craft, Legacy Leather, Perri Fine Furniture, Simmons Upholstery Canada, Sklar Peppler, Superstyle Furniture and Trend-Line Furniture.
The dinner honoring Dennis Novosel as Retailer of the Year will be held at the Pearson Convention Center on Monday, Aug. 14. For tickets to the dinner or more information about the show, contact OFMA's Dave Hanna at (905) 677-6561, or by e-mail at dhanna@ofma.ca.
