HP to get $3 million
By Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, July 9, 2006
Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina legislature has adopted a state budget that includes nearly $3 million for the High Point furniture market, including $1.75 million for marketing and promotion and $1.2 million to run the market's transportation system.
The shuttle system funds, part of the state Department of Transportation budget, were never in dispute. However, the state House and Senate budgets originally included different amounts of money for marketing, which are part of the Department of Commerce budget. Market organizers had asked for, and the Senate agreed, to set aside $1.75 million for marketing and promotion. House budget-writers, however, cut it to $750,000, which was the amount appropriated for the previous fiscal year that ended June 30.
The additional $1 million was restored in a House-Senate conference committee that wrote the final budget, which both chambers adopted late last week. N.C. Gov. Mike Easley was expected to sign the budget bill.
The conference committee also agreed that half the marketing and promotional funds, or $875,000, would be a recurring budget item, which means it automatically will be included in each year's budget.
The additional money from the state is part of an aggressive, five-year funding plan recently adopted by directors of the International Home Furnishings Market Authority, the organization that oversees the market.
Additional funds also are coming from showroom owners, who soon will begin paying a higher showroom tax, and the city of High Point, which is contributing $1 million to the market effort.
