Ashley plans big addition to N.C. plant

ADVANCE, N.C. — Ashley Furniture Inds. is moving forward with construction on its Davie County manufacturing and distribution facility here.

The company is adding more than one million square feet to its current 1.7 million square-foot complex on about 640 acres of land in Advance. This site includes 418,000 square feet of warehouse and distribution facilities being converted to case goods and upholstery manufacturing.

The site also houses 32 former tobacco storage buildings. Ashley has been using many of these for product and equipment storage.

When completed, the facility will be Ashley's largest facility and the largest furniture manufacturing and distribution center in the United States, the company said. In addition to North Carolina, it operates manufacturing plants in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and California and has a warehouse and distribution facility in Brandon, Fla.

The company is holding an invitation-only groundbreaking event on April 17, which will be attended by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and other state and local dignitaries. The company plans a community open house to be held at a later date.

I'm Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
