Case goods sources get aggressive with intros

LAS VEGAS — This week's case goods introductions at the Las Vegas Market are aimed at continuing growth the category experienced in 2012 with stylish looks that span from small bedroom and dining room groups to full collections.
The introductions also delve into new territory for some companies, including Aspenhome. It is offering what it said is its first contemporary bedroom, Modena.
Made with birch veneers in a tortoiseshell finish, Modena has multi-dimensional drawer fronts and custom hardware. It is targeted to retail at $1,999 for four pieces including a bed dresser, mirror and night stand.
The company is also launching its first solid wood bedroom, Spruce Bay. Retailing from $2,499 to $2,799, it is in Engelmann spruce in a light honey finish that highlights repurposed elements such as saw blade marks and hand planing.
Typically its bedrooms retail from $1,999 to $2,999 for four pieces. This market, it is offering an entry-level price point with a $1,499 bedroom called Genesis that is made with cherry veneers in a brown finish.
Whittier Wood Products is also delving into new territory this week with a new mantel storage bed on an adjustable bed base. Retailing at $2,750 in queen, the McKenzie mantel storage bed has three drawers on either side. The adjustable bed base also is designed to work with other new platform models the company will introduce in the future, said Conni Barofsky, director of marketing.
A.R.T. Furniture is launching three collections, the most it has introduced at a Las Vegas Market, said Bill Sibbick, vice president of sales. These include Classics, a 35-piece whole home collection featuring four-piece bedrooms targeted to retail at $2,999 and a table and six chairs at $1,599.
The other two are Marbella Noire, a bedroom collection in an ebony rub-through finish, and Mediterranean, a dining room with metal work on table bases and china and buffet units.
"We are just being very aggressive in terms of how we are approaching this year," Sibbick said, adding that the new groups are set to ship in April. "We feel we have the avenue and dealer structure to distribute it, and we like we want to kick the year off with a bang and get a running start."
Master and youth bedroom specialist Elements International is showing six new bedrooms targeted to retail from $799 to $1,999. While known for its promotional and lower middle priced values, the company wanted to offer some sets at the upper end of its line in response to demand in the marketplace.
"Certainly there are people gravitating to higher prices," said Mike Wurster, president. "Good, entry level product will do well, but our customers are trying to move their price points up a little bit.... If they are wanting to put something new and fresh out there, they want to make a little more money on it too."
Solid wood resource Horizon Home is showing three new bedroom groups in pine, with seven to eight SKUs each. Four-piece sets are targeted to retail from $1,099 to $1,399, which are typical price points for the line, which is made in Mexico.
The company also is showing three new casual dining groups that are targeted to retail from $799 to $999 for table and four chairs. The introductions include a counter-height set in the $999 retail range and a larger scale rectangular table for around $899. They also include small kitchen side pieces with storage starting at $249 and larger 72-inch units retailing from $699 to $799.
The company is also introducing its Express Program, which will stock about 50% of the items in the line for quick shipment. They'll ship from the company's Mexico plant in about two weeks from the time of order and will reach stores in 30 days or less, depending on the location.
The program, geared toward less-than-truckload shipments, will cut lead times in half, said Felipe Orozco, vice president of sales.
"For the larger swatch of dealers that don't buy truckloads, they can control their inventory and they can run special order programs," he said.
Emerald Home Furnishings continues its aggressive push into case goods with an updated traditional whole home wood collection called Interludes, in figured walnut veneers with a mink finish. Four-piece bedrooms are targeted to hit medium price points, with retails ranging from $1,499 to $1,799.
Brighton is a casual dining collection that features a 48-inch round table that extends to a 68-inch oval and a counter-height table at 38 by 56 inches, which extends to a 56-inch square with a single self-storing leaf. Brighton five-piece table and chair sets are targeted to retail from $599 to $999.
Brighton also offers a multipurpose buffet server with a breakfront design and open, serpentine-shaped decorative center, plus a china display cabinet with a two-tone dove gray exterior and cashew-brown interior.
"Emerald Home Furnishings will continue to differentiate our case goods product line not only with compelling styles and multi-step finishes, but also with a ‘benefit-built' construction story typically seen at the higher end," said John Iasiello, vice president of wood products. Among the features are English dovetail construction, full-height drawers, supporting corner blocks on drawer bottoms, cedar-lined bottom drawers and full extension metal drawer guides.
AICO, meanwhile, is launching a new classic contemporary collection called Cloche. It offers bedroom and formal dining in mahogany and burl veneers and mixed-media elements, including a tufted leather headboard on a panel bed and stainless steel trim on a table base and arm chairs.
A-America is showing several new solid wood bedrooms and casual dining sets including Vista, a 10-piece bedroom made with solid ash that retails at $2,999 for four pieces and Mariposa, an 11-piece set that offers both regular and gathering height table and four-chair sets retailing from $999 to $1,999.
Case goods resource Stanley Furniture is making its Las Vegas debut this week. While the company will primarily be showing introductions from High Point along with bestselling collections, its presentation is meant to turn buyers' heads.
Its primary 8,800-square-foot space in the Las Vegas Design Center on the ground floor of Building A is laid out to resemble a series of houses that have traditional, contemporary and coastal interiors. The company will show product that represents these lifestyles. It also will have a residential interior designed to accommodate its newest collections. A 2,600-square-foot space across the hall is devoted to its opening priced Portfolio product line.
"This is the debut of our newest showroom concept and a coming out party for Stanley's new look," said Adam Tilley, vice president of product development, noting that the company is launching a similar showroom look at its new space in High Point. "Because we have so much going on in our Stanley showrooms, we are repositioning all the collections in a new light.... We have spent the better part of the year completely rehauling and re-envisioning the entire market experience."
