Barclay Butera designing Hearst Castle room

First new design at estate since 1947

HIGH POINT — Upholstery source and designer Barclay Butera is creating a contemporary interior for the Heart Castle Overnight program inspired by the design collaboration of Julia Morgan and William Randolph Hearst.

This is the first interior design of a room at Hearst Castle since Hearst left his lavish California estate in 1947.

"I have a great respect for Mr. Hearst's vision and am confident that he would be proud of the completed room in this incredible home," said Butera, CEO and president of Barclay Butera Home, which is showing at the High Point Market this week in the International Home Furnishings Center, IH-102.

Hearst Castle is now a California historical monument and state park. An overnight stay at the castle was sold at a benefit auction sponsored by the Friends of Hearst Castle in 2008, honoring the 50th anniversary of public access.

The winning couple has invited eight friends for a swim in the Neptune Pool, tennis, dinner on the terrace, garden stroll and after-dinner movie in the Castle theater, followed by an evening for two in the room Butera is designing, which has a view of the Pacific Ocean.

The room will feature contemporary reproductions and interpretative designs by Hearst Castle Collection licensees, including Barclay Butera Home.

Other participants in the project include Architectural Detail Group, Castilian, Habersham, Hearst Castle Collection Design, Ambience by Minka Group, Pindler & Pindler, Taracea, Tilevera, Jeff Margolin and Susan Ward Designs.
