Exhibitors plump up pillow offerings

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, July 25, 2006

A pillow is just a pillow, right?

Wrong. Look at the wide variety of shapes, sizes and constructions offered in a plethora of pillow programs in bedding showrooms here.

Bedding producers say that pillows are a natural add-on sale for the mattress. And, just like mattresses, pillows offer a full range of comfort levels at a broad spectrum of retail prices, from $9.99 to $165.

New for the market here is the RejuveNite branded pillow program launched by Latex International, one of the world's largest producers of Talalay latex. The program features a 12-pillow lineup in a wide variety of styles and constructions. The line is targeted to specialty bedding retailers and furniture stores.

Kevin Stein, vice president of marketing for Latex International, said the new program will "personalize her sleep experience, promote better rest, and increase retail profits."

Latex is showing RejuveNite at the Las Vegas Convention Center, space S63016.

Kaymed, meanwhile, is expanding its Numuru flotation sleep concept to pillows at this market. The producer, showing in Pavilion 1, space 4704, now offers its nesting memory foam cells in its Sound Sleep Pillow, retailing at $120.

Tempur-Pedic, which offers a visco pillow program, has five pillows that feature that producer's proprietary Tempur material. "Whether looking to support the entire body, or seeking wellness while on the road, Tempur-Pedic pillows deliver luxurious comfort and support," the company said.

Tempur-Pedic (World Market Center, space 1036) said BodyPillow is designed to offer what it "total body indulgence and comfort." The pillow, which is 36 inches long and 14 inches wide, is ideal for side-sleepers and expectant mothers, the company said. It has a removable, washable, allergen-resistant cover, comes with a three-year limited warranty, and has a suggested retail price of $150.

The company's Swedish Neck Pillow, retailing from $85 to $165, has an ergonomic shape that fits the natural curve between the neck and shoulders to help prevent and relieve pain, the company said. It is ideal, according to Tempur-Pedic, for back or side sleepers.

Tempur-Pedic also offers pillows in more traditional shapes, like its ComfortPillow, which is also available in a travel size. Retails range from $80 to $150.

Chris Henning, president of Tempur-Pedic Retail, said the pillow is a vital ingredient in helping consumers get a good night's sleep. "The only thing more important than the right bed," he said, "is the right pillow."

Bedding major Serta (WMC, space 710) has a broad offering of pillows, with filling ingredients ranging from polyester to down to a down alternative. Its Serta KoolComfort memory foam pillows have retails ranging from $40 to $100. KoolComfort foam breathes to keep the sleeper cooler and more comfortable, according to Serta. It also uses new technologies to provide antibacterial and odor-absorbing protection.

And Serta is going high-tech with its Balanced AirRest products, which provide adjustable comfort at the touch of a button. Accessories in the program are engineered from a patented air system. Air chambers in each AirRest pillow and mattress topper are encased in KoolComfort memory foam. The pillows carry a suggested retail of $119.

Sealy (Pavilion 2, space 8005) gives its retailers several choices in the pillows it licenses through Pacific Coast Feather. Comfort levels of soft, medium and firm support are offered, at retails starting at $16.99.

A pillow with extra-firm support has a starting retail of $19.99, while a pillow in Sealy's Trueform line, cushioned with visco-elastic foam, retails at $79.

Spring Air (LVCC, space S75125) is tackling the visco pillow market with two products: a visco contour pillow and a pillow that incorporates shredded visco for a different feel.

Both pillows carry suggested retails of $70, and provide "excellent" profits for the retailer, according to Spring Air.
