Nichols & Stone adds fabric, leather upholstery

MANILUS, N.Y. — Venerable case goods source Nichols & Stone rolled out its first upholstery line in High Point last month, leading to “the biggest placement market we've ever had,” according to company executive Ron Sock.
Sock is president of Craftsman Leather of Stickley, the parent company of Nichols & Stone, which put its upholstery manufacturing capabilities behind the launch of the 90-piece collection. Both fabric and leather pieces are included.
Nichols & Stone President Tuck Nichols said the company wanted to capitalize on its 150-year history and reputation for quality workmanship in extending its brand into upholstery, and spent a year getting the line ready to launch.
Sock said the goal was to keep the line simple, clean and well tailored without going in too many design directions.
“We wanted to have enough choices that consumers could personalize it but not be too daunting,” he said.
The result is styles that range from lodge to contemporary, with a limited range of 80 fabrics (three grades) and 10 leathers (one grade). Skirts and nail trim are options consumers can use to personalize their pieces.
Retail price points start at $1,299 and go up to $1,999, providing entrée to Stickley's starting upholstery price of $2,299.
A 35,000-square-foot warehouse in Archdale, N.C., has been up-fitted to produce Nichols & Stone upholstery. Stickley also has an upholstery plant there, employing 165 people. The new facility will run on a just-in-time manufacturing system, with a three-week delivery cycle to dealers.
Nichols & Stone also introduced five collections of occasional furniture under the name Departures to complement the new upholstery.
