SOMERVILLE, N.J. — The Greater Metropolitan Home Furnishings Assn. will honor retailer Pat Luthy of Succasunna, N.J.-based Suburban Furniture and Mattress, and Surya CEO Satya Tiwari during the group's annual Gala Dinner & Dance Dec. 7 at Palisadium in Cliffside Park, N.J.

Luthy will receive the 2013 Howard Liveright Award, acknowledging people who have made an outstanding contribution to the home furnishings industry. Tiwari will be honored with the Jerry Gans Memorial Award, given to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself with deeds and service to the industry.

The event draws a crowd of industry retailers, manufacturers, representatives and suppliers.

"For over 25 years, Pat has been the ‘Mom' behind the family-owned furniture store she runs with her husband, Ken, and son Kenny," GMFA said in a release. Luthy is the chief buyer and visual display manager.

The Luthys acquired Suburban Furniture in the late 1980s and it "continues to operate like a good old fashioned, local family owned store," Pat Luthy said. "The community has given so much to our family, and we appreciate it.

"I am extremely honored and proud to receive this award," she added.

Rick Aaronson, a Klaussner Furniture representative and longtime member of the GMFA board, said Luthy "has a passion for the furniture business, loves being at work and her hands-on approach to the business is reflected not only in the merchandise she buys but also in the beautiful way she has it displayed."

GMFA said Tiwari has been instrumental to the growth of Surya, a supplier of area rugs and home accessories.

"Under his leadership, the company has grown to $64 million in annual revenues from 2004 through 2012," the association said. Tiwari also was an associate at Compass Partners International in New York from 2002 to 2004 and was an investment banking analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Along with Surya, he supports Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world's largest non-governmental organization-run meal program, in its mission to fight hunger, promote education and eradicate poverty for underprivileged children in rural India. He also supports the East Meets West Foundation's Scholarship Program to Enhance Literacy and Learning, which provides funding for school fees, books, uniforms and other expenses for impoverished students in India and Vietnam.

"We are so pleased that Satya will be accepting the Gans award this year," said Andy Gans of Gans Bros., and son of Jerry Gans. "He is widely respected in the home furnishings community, not only for his ability to run a profitable business, but also for being a good friend to his suppliers, and a role model to his employees. His leadership is reflected in the way Surya is perceived in the industry and by its customers."

Patrick Cory, managing partner of Cory First Home Delivery and president of GMFA, said Suburban Furniture and Surya "represent the best of what the furniture industry has to offer in terms of customer service and overall value. And, it's always gratifying to honor individuals who have given back so much."
