Vaughan-Bassett to introduce occasional tables, media centers

GALAX, Va. — To better serve its dealer base, bedroom manufacturer Vaughan-Bassett is offering two new categories at the High Point Market - media centers and occasional tables.

The company showed a number of new pieces at the Sept 9-10 Premarket and received strong response to both lines, officials said.

The pieces are made in its Galax, Va., production facilities, which the company expanded in early 2012 with the opening of a former Webb particleboard plant next to its main factory. The additional capacity has allowed the company to add the new categories.

The media centers come in three sizes - 44, 54 and 66 inches - as well as four styles including casual, cottage, traditional and lifestyle. Each item also comes in six finishes - cherry, merlot, black, white, light oak and dark oak.

The units are targeted to retail from $359 to $559.

There are six occasional table groups, which tie in with either the entertainment units or media centers in the bedroom category. There also are six finishes available.

One group comes in all six of these options, two others are available in four finishes, two more come in three finishes and one is available in one finish, said Doug Bassett, president.

"These are new divisions for us," he said. "We plan to be a major player in three different wood categories."

Cocktails retail from $199 to $399 and offer a variety of design elements such as glass tops, finished drawers, shelves, stretchers and lift-top mechanisms.

The pieces will be shipped fully assembled and will ship with some Vaughan-Bassett bedrooms to allow dealers better shipping efficiencies.

"Almost no one is making mid-priced tables in the United States anymore, and the dealer may not know what he is missing," Bassett said. "We will give our dealers greater variety, quicker delivery and pieces that require no extra assembly work in the dealer's back room. That's something imports struggle to offer."

Bassett said the company was encouraged by the response it received to the new categories at September's High Point Premarket.

"The reception at Premarket was fantastic," he said, noting that the company has already begun shipping the first cutting of the media centers as well as a coordinating occasional group. "We figured we were coming in about right. It has a lot to do with flexibility."

The second cutting of the media centers and coordinating occasional will ship in mid-October. The balance of the groups will ship in early 2014 and hit retail in January and February.

Bassett estimated that in 2014, the new categories will do at least $10 million "and perhaps quite a bit more" in sales. Today, the company has about $90 million in annual sales.

Vaughan-Bassett also announced that starting in 2014, 100% of the furniture it sells will be made in the U.S. In recent years, this figure was 98%, with bunk beds and student desk chairs made in Vietnam and Indonesia. It has replaced a bunk bed with a daybed and will have the chair contracted out to a company in Tennessee, Bassett said.

The new products will be on display at the Oct. 19-24 market in Vaughan-Bassett's showroom in the International Home Furnishings Center, C-1000.
