MANCHESTER, Conn. — Bob's Discount Furniture and the American Red Cross are teaming up for the fifth year of their annual High School Heroes scholarship program.
Since its inception, the program's scholarship funds have increased from $100,000 to this year's total of $250,000.
The High School Heroes program honors students who make exceptional contributions to the American Red Cross blood donor program in their schools, and helps encourage young people to become involved by helping patients in need.
"We're honored to support the American Red Cross and their lifesaving services for more than 17 years," said Bob Kaufman, president of Bob's Discount Furniture. "Since this program launched in 2009, we've awarded more than $400,000 to hundreds of students across New England, and look forward to touching more lives this year."
Kaufman has personal reasons for his involvement with the Red Cross, as medical crises required two of his family members to receive blood transfusions due to leukemia. Bob's Discount Furniture Blood Drives have collected more than 33,000 units of lifesaving blood.
"Bob's Discount Furniture has been an unwavering supporter of the American Red Cross and the patients and communities we serve," said Donna M. Morrissey, American Red Cross Northeast Division director of communications. "This $250,000 scholarship will not only substantially increase blood collection efforts but will also be a way to honor the student leaders who will hopefully become lifelong donors."
