PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — Sweden-based specialty home furnishings retail giant Ikea expects to open its first Ohio store north of Cincinnati in fall 2007.
The 339,000-square-foot store in West Chester will be the chain’s fifth Midwest unit. Construction should begin this fall on 56 acres along I-75 at the southeastern corner of Allen and Muhlhauser roads, south of the Union Center Boulevard exit. Ikea plans to sell about six acres at the site for complementary retail and restaurant uses.
"We are thrilled to enter Ohio in West Chester, with its family atmosphere and growing business environment, where we can draw from the Cincinnati area; from Columbus and Dayton, Ohio; Indianapolis; and from Lexington and Louisville, Ky.," said Michael Maier, Ikea real estate manager.
Other Ikea Midwest stores are in Bloomington, Minn.; Canton, Mich., which opened in June 2006; and in the Chicago suburbs of Bolingbrook and Schaumburg, Ill.
The metro Cincinnati store will be a typical Ikea big box, offering nearly 10,000 items and featuring three model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children's play area and a 300-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American dishes.
The store is expected to employ about 400 people.
Ikea currently has 237 stores in 34 countries, including 28 in the United States, where the company plans to open three to five stores a year. Other U.S. stores are in the works in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Draper, Utah; Dublin, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Portland, Ore.; Round Rock, Texas; Somerville, Mass.; and Sunrise, Fla.
Ikea ranks No. 4 on Furniture/Today’s latest listing of Top 100 U.S. furniture stores, with estimated 2005 sales of furniture, bedding and accessories of nearly $1.3 billion, a 17.2% jump from 2004, and total U.S. revenues of $2 billion.
