WARREN, Mich. — Art Van Furniture has donated $2 million to support Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's Michigan Education Excellence Foundation and Detroit school children.

The foundation is a charity that supports "the Education Achievement Authority's operation of 15 of Detroit's lowest-achieving schools, provide scholarships and ensure every Detroit child is enrolled in an excellent school by 2020," according to a release. To date, the organization has raised $60 million in donations.

"I am extremely passionate about children and education, so when Gov. Snyder asked me to help, I was honored," Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Top 100 company, said in a statement.

The Educational Achievement Authority's approach challenges the traditional learning system, the release said, noting that students don't progress by grade level, but instead by performance.
