Wednesday, 15 May 2013 - Bedding Editor David Perry talks to Michael Faus, senior vice president of Carpenter Co., at last week's Bedding Conference about the specialty sleep sector. Faus said even though sales were off in March, he expected it to be a temporary problem and there would be an uptick in traffic at the retail level by the third quarter. He attributed the success of specialty sleep to a better effort at building the brand through increased advertising and promotions. Also, the quality of the product has improved significantly. Faus added that the variety and options are the best it has ever been for consumers.
Wednesday, 15 May 2013 - Bedding Editor David Perry talks to Dale Carlsen, chief executive of retailer Sleep Train, at last week's Bedding Conference. He expects an uptick in business as the year continues.
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 - Bedding Editor David Perry talks to Guy Eckert, executive vice president of Outlast Technologies, last week at the Furniture Today Bedding Conference about temperature regulation technology in mattresses.
Eckert explained that consumers are becoming more and more educated about what they need to do to get a good night's sleep. "Studies show that you want to sleep in a cooler, more comfortable environment," he said. Outlast's phase change materials adapt to your skin temperature and help wick away the heat, plus control humidity to make you more comfortable. Eckert also talked about the mattress technology advancements you can expect going forward.

She explained that the company's Optimum product is really driving their growth in the segment. She attributed the success to a strong advertising program in the first quarter. She added that consumers are really embracing the new hybrid offerings due to the innovation and technology provided. Allen said Sealy plans to do more advertising to educate the consumer on the benefits of the half foam, half spring mix and market it as the perfect combination of comfort and support.
