Ashley leads in growth

Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, August 20, 2006

Ashley Furniture HomeStores has been the fastest-growing Top 100 store chain for four years now, or exactly as long as Furniture/Today has been able to measure its year-over-year growth.

There's no doubt Ashley's dedicated store network is making a mark in the industry. What started out as an under-the-radar vehicle to build distribution in remote areas of the country — one of the first HomeStores opened in Anchorage, Alaska — has turned into the No. 2 U.S. furniture store chain last year, with estimated sales of $1.58 billion, up more than 73% from 2004, from 219 stores at the end of 2005.

And in 2006, a year of what seems to be increased retail consolidation, Ashley HomeStores are thriving. With plans to open another 100 stores and with sales only a few ticks away from No. 1 Rooms To Go's $1.6 billion in 2005, Ashley is poised to rise to the top.

Success didn't happen overnight. Chairman Ron Wanek and son Todd Wanek, now president and CEO, spent years building Ashley's sourcing, manufacturing and logistics capabilities. In 1997, they launched the all-Ashley store concept, which Ron Wanek said was created so the company could deliver efficiently mixed truckloads of goods to remote areas of the country.

But it wasn't long before not-so-remote retailers recognized the power of the concept. Top 100 companies such as City Furniture in Florida and Furniture Outlets USA in South Dakota jumped on board. Dedicated HomeStores are going up now in big and small markets alike.

As industry analyst Jerry Epperson pointed out earlier this year, Ashley store dealers make money, "and that's really sort of a novel idea."

And recent retail sluggishness hasn't clipped the Ashley HomeStores phenomenon. Some in the industry have cited competition from these stores as a factor in store closings around the country. Ashley says it remains committed to the independent dealers who brought it to the dance, offering an extensive and exclusive line for non-HomeStore retailers.
