Home office resources hope to gain floor space

LAS VEGAS — Home office vendors at the las vegas market showcased a number of new products and styles geared toward securing more floor space in the category this year.

In recent years, vendors have competed for a shrinking amount of floor space at retail by offering smaller scale, laptop friendly units that take up less room on the floor.

This market, a number of resources continued with that strategy. But introduction

s were also style driven, with new looks and lighter, more casual finishes.

Sligh Furniture's Barton Creek home office and home entertainment collection was a new casual lifestyle look for the company. Dealers responded well to pieces such as writing and desks and bookcase units made with mindi wood in a driftwood finish.

Dealers liked the distressed sandblasted look of the finish as well as design details such as shutter style panels on desks and consoles. Other popular details include industrial style metal accents such as cusp hardware and metal straps and leg supports on a writing desk.

Sligh also received strong response to office pieces in its British Colonial inspired Halton House. Dealers liked the traditional design elements such as hand-carved corner posts and columns and turned legs. They also were drawn to functional elements ranging from touch lighting to power, Internet and data ports.

Bush Furniture also delved into new designs in its licensed Kathy Ireland line of office and entertainment furniture. Among the top performers were a number of laptop friendly desks retailing from $199 to $299 in its New York Skyline collection. Dealers especially liked the transitional design elements including frosted glass tops and the availability of pieces in white and dark brown finishes.

New pieces in the Kathy Ireland Aloha and Grand Expressions groups also did well. A signature piece in Aloha was a corner desk unit with a drop-down work surface and drawer storage at the base. Retailing at $299, this also comes in two finishes, Volcano Dusk and distressed white.

Bush Furniture's entry level price point line MySpace included a new desk with a drawer and file unit in a mocha cherry finish. Dealers liked the storage elements as well as the textured, embossed finish of the piece.

Aspenhome received commitments and orders on its new smaller scale peninsula wall desks in its Cambridge collection, in black and brown cherry finishes.

The three-piece units retail at $1,399.

"We are seeing an increase in requests for multiple workspace areas designed for both laptop and PC users that fits into smaller rooms," said Bryan Edwards, vice president of sales. "Our new peninsula walls will do just that."

The company also received positive response to a new, lighter Harvest oak finish on its E2 Class of desks and bookcase units.

Vendors for the most part were pleased with traffic at market.
