Tempur-Pedic spotlights pillows
Marketing will highlight visco-elastic material
David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 21, 2006
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Tempur-Pedic, which has made visco-elastic mattresses a hot commodity on retail floors, is now turning up the marketing heat on its visco pillows.
The visco bedding leader has long packed a potent pillow lineup. It used the July Las Vegas Market to turn the spotlight on pillows, including the introduction of its seventh model, The SymphonyPillow by Tempur-Pedic.That dual-sided pillow, which will retail for $99 and ships to dealers by the end of this month, features a new, softer formulation of the company’s proprietary Tempur material. One side is gently arched to provide additional head and neck support for back sleepers, while the other side’s more conventional shape gives a more traditional feel and works well for side sleepers, the company said.Chris Henning, president of Tempur-Pedic Retail, said the pillow’s Las Vegas launch was successful.
“We are directing added focus to our pillow offerings,” he said. “Pillows are an important component to the entire sleep system purchase.”The SymphonyPillow’s softer formulation is designed to help Tempur-Pedic reach a different consumer audience, he said.Tempur-Pedic also announced that its SidePillow, whose ergonomic shape is designed for side sleepers, is now exclusively available through the company’s retail channel. The company’s line also includes the Swedish Neck Pillow, whose ergonomic shape has become a staple on bedding floors. That pillow, designed for back or side-sleepers, also is offered in a travel size.Other Tempur-Pedic pillows include the ComfortPillow, a more traditionally shaped pillow that offers a plush comfort feel, the Classic Pillow, which offers functional and therapeutic neck support, and the Body Pillow, ideal for side-sleepers and expectant mothers, the company says. The pillows retail from $85 to $165.Tempur-Pedic also used the Las Vegas Market to re-emphasize bedding products it introduced in January, including the top-of-the-line GrandBed. Unveiled with much fanfare, the model has more than lived up to the buzz, Henning said.“It has been extremely well received,” he said. “We are definitely pleased with the velocity at such an ultra-premium price point and it has exceeded our expectations at this point.” The GrandBed retails at $6,000 in queen.
