Durham expands Mount Vernon program

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, October 16, 2006

Durham, the Canada-based solid-wood bedroom maker, is delving into West Indies styling this market with its latest group for the Mount Vernon Classics line.

The second licensed collection with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Assn. is George Washington: Journey to Barbados.

The first U.S. president never ventured outside the country while in office. In fact, said Ron Fuhrman, Durham's vice president of marketing and product development, the Founding Father only once traveled outside what would become the United States. In 1751. at the age of 19, Washington journeyed to Barbados with his older half-brother Lawrence.

"The experiences that George Washington had, and the social contacts he made on Barbados, are believed by many historians to have had a profound impact on his life and future," said Fuhrman. "This collection offers the consumer interesting stories and points of interest to delight the senses."

The North American-made, moderately scaled collection should appeal to the consumer seeking to bring the natural beauty of the islands into her home, said Kay Canada, vice president of sales at Durham. "Journey to Barbados is ideal for vacation homes and lake-side properties, and designed to support our business in coastal regions as well."

The 17-piece bedroom group is made of solid birch and maple, with select pieces featuring cane inserts. The midtoned finish is accentuated by subtle distressing and burnishing. Details include routed keyholes, exposed dovetails on parting rails, raised side panels and hand-hammered square walnut pegs in round holes.

Washington was quite fond of pineapples, said Fuhrman, and the fruit's shape is incorporated into the poster bed's finials. The X-shaped lattice motif on the bed was drawn from railings of historic buildings on the island, while the solid, cast hardware has a rope twist design suggesting the sloop on which the brothers sailed to Barbados.

Durham shows in Market Square, space 410.
