HIGH POINT — HW Home of Denver and Coconis Furniture of South Zanesville, Ohio, have been named 2013 Retailers of the Year by the National Home Furnishings Assn.
HW Home, owned by Ron Werner and Jim Hering, is the honoree in the category for annual sales under $10 million while Coconis, owned by Randy Coconis, is the honoree with sales over $10 million.
The awards will be presented at the annual Furniture Industry Awards Gala, set for 6:15 p.m. Monday, April 22, in the International Home Furnishings Center Ballroom, 11th floor, Green Wing. The gala takes place during the spring High Point Market, which runs April 20-25.
Retailer of the Year candidates are nominated by members of the home furnishings industry and are selected for their contributions to the industry, community service and personal business achievements, according to the NHFA.
Werner and Hering opened HW Home in 1999 after realizing that Denver and Boulder, Colo., did not have a chic lifestyle store. Their concept was to offer merchandise with a design center sensibility at competitive price points and maintain stock levels. HW Home now has three stores and a distribution center in the Colorado Front Range area. The retailer also works on design projects nationwide.
Werner serves on the NHFA board and Hering is on the board of the Accessory Resource team.
Randy Coconis began working in his family-owned business in 1972, and he and his brother, Paul Coconis Jr., became owners in 1986 after their father died. Coconis Furniture has grown from six employees to about 60 and the showroom had gone from 5,000 square feet to more than 70,000 square feet.
The store also has a 30,000-square-foot warehouse that was built in 2005 and a satellite location that sells mattress and reclining furniture that opened in 2010. The retailer also is completing plans for a 30,000-square-foot store that will be in Heath, Ohio.
Coconis is a past recipient of Ohio's Furniture Retailer of the Year and past treasurer of the Ohio Home Furnishings Assn. He serves on the board of the Furniture First buying group will be on the board of the new North American Home Furnishings Assn., to be established this year with the merger of the NHFA, the Western Home Furnishings Assn. and the Home Furnishings Independents Assn., NHFA officials said.
