Conover, N.C. — Retailer Boyles Distinctive Furniture here is partnering with television's "The Dr. Phil Show" and "DIY to the Rescue" to design and furnish interiors for three families whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
After the storm, the families were victimized a second time by a scam construction operation that started but didn't complete repairs to their homes. The companies made off with the families' insurance money.
Dr. Phil and the DIY Network show featured the families.
"Boyles was contacted by both 'The Dr. Phil Show' and the DIY Network with separate requests for small gift certificates for the homeowners to redeem toward furniture," said Dean Thompson, Boyles marketing director.
"We immediately wanted to do more," he continued. "Our designers gathered information about the families and their homes and hit the ground running, selecting furniture, mattresses, accessories and window treatments. Boyles is donating approximately $100,000 worth of furnishings to these worthy families."
The retailer's team recently traveled to New Orleans to install the product in the refurbished homes. The TV shows will reveal the homes as a surprise to the owners.
Boyles designers Tyler Burns and Kathy Gordon designed the interiors of several rooms in the two homes that were refurbished. A third damaged home had to be demolished, and the DIY Network rebuilt it, with Missy Caulk of Boyles designing the interiors of all the rooms.
The installation and filming took place Sept. 21 and 22. Air dates for the shows have yet to be announced.
