PONTOTOC, Miss. - Motion upholstery producer Southern Motion is set to begin work on a 180,000-square-foot expansion of its factory here, a move that will add at least 200 jobs during the next two years.
The $7 million project will give the company about 680,000 square feet of production, warehouse and office space here.
"We are excited about our new expansion, which is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the entire Southern Motion family," said Roger Bland, Southern Motion president. "We have been very fortunate to grow our business in Mississippi, and our latest expansion will allow us to continue our commitment to manufacturing quality, American-made motion furniture."
The Mississippi Development Authority worked with the company on the expansion and is providing funds for public infrastructure improvements.
"The Mississippi Development Authority and Pontotoc County Board of Supervisors helped make this expansion a reality," said Guy Lipscomb, the company's chairman and CEO. "We appreciate the time and effort that our public officials have devoted to this project."
The latest project is the company's third expansion in two years. New production lines added 70 jobs earlier this year, and a similar project in 2009 added 65 jobs.
Bland said the latest expansion could create as many as 400 jobs over the next five years.
