Five new fabric groups added to Ruggiero line

By Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, October 18, 2006

Connecting with interior designers is a priority for many furniture marketers, and that's the idea behind Joe Ruggiero's latest collections of Sunbrella fabrics, shown on his upholstery at Norwalk Furniture (215 S. Main St.).

Among the five new collections of Sunbrella performance fabrics is Americasia, a classically styled melding of American and Asian cultures that Ruggiero contemporized by using colors lighter than typical for Asian design.

"Asian art and culture have been the inspiration for home furnishings for centuries, dating back to Chippendale in the 1700s," he said. "Our new Sunbrella fabrics collection continues this tradition, but with an American twist to make the fabrics more relevant for today's homeowners."

Patterns in Americasia include Chip, inspired by Chippendale furniture fretwork; Geisha, inspired by a collection of geisha kimonos that Ruggiero discovered in Japan; and Kimono, a small-scale floral pattern based on garments often worn by geishas underneath their more elaborate silk kimonos.

In addition to the Americasia collection and four others — Loft in Space, Chelsea Cottage, Malibu Country and New Traditions — Ruggiero is launching a Studio collection, which features patterns from all five new collections and offered with added color depth.

"The goal in offering the Studio collection is to make it easier for interior designers to take advantage of coordination opportunities throughout my entire collection for Sunbrella," he said.

The Ruggiero collection for Sunbrella is influenced by art, antique textiles and cultures from around the world.

"Our collections are based on a vast amount of lifestyles research and on the trends we see on fashion runways and through interior design and architecture from around the world," he said. "As the collection shows, we view geometrics as an important trend going forward this year."

Ruggiero also designs a collection of casual furniture for Terra Furniture, a collection of wood furniture by Caperton Furnitureworks, and a lamp collection by Orbit.
