Levitz will move HQ to Manhattan
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 5, 2006
Woodbury, N.Y. — Levitz Furniture will move its headquarters from this Long Island city to Manhattan in mid-December, and says the new address will help it continue to bring in talent as it revitalizes the brand.
The company will occupy about 30,000 square feet — the entire 23rd floor — of the historic Woolworth Building at 233 Broadway. The 80-store Top 100 company will keep a small corporate presence in Woodbury, mostly for information technology functions. It did not disclose its investment in the new space.
"We are continuing our efforts to strengthen the Levitz brand, and this move to lower Manhattan represents one more important step," said CEO Tom Baumlin.
Prentice Capital Management and liquidator Great American Group acquired Levitz's assets out of bankruptcy in December and subsequently brought in new management and closed the worst-performing stores.
The 54-story Woolworth Building, built in 1913, was the world's tallest building until it was surpassed by 40 Wall Street in 1930. Today it's one of the 20 tallest buildings in New York.
