Longtime Texas retailer George Edward Smead dies at 87
Operated stores for more than 40 years

MIDLAND, Texas — George Edward Smead, a furniture retailer in Texas for more than 40 years, has died at age 87.Smead joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and later transferred to the infantry. He was discharged in 1946 and two years later, he and his wife, Mildred, opened Ideal Furniture Co. in Kermit, Texas, which they ran for 22 years. The couple later moved to Midland and opened Aladdin House Furniture, which they operated until their retirement in 1991.
Ed Smead was a past president of the Texas Furniture Assn. and spent 10 years on the board of directors of the National Home Furnishings Assn.
He is survived by his wife, a son, five grandchildren and two nephews.
