Coaster reaches deal in lawsuits
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 16, 2009
PICO RIVERA, Calif. — Coaster Co. has settled patent infringement cases filed by Palliser Furniture and Casana Furniture.
Both complaints were filed in October 2008 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.
Palliser's complaint alleged that Coaster's Promenade ottoman infringed on style elements of Palliser's Tracer ottoman. Casana alleged that Coaster's Phoenix furniture group infringed on various style elements of Casana's Valencia, Torino and Rodea furniture groups.
Palliser and Casana had each sued Coaster for patent infringement, trade dress infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices.
The companies said they resolved the dispute amicably, but declined to disclose other specifics of the settlements.
They did say that Coaster can continue to sell the disputed products, and that Coaster has acknowledged the validity and enforceability of the patent and trade dress rights that were asserted.
