David Rothschild II, longtime fabric executive
COLUMBUS, Ga. — David Rothschild II, chairman of upholstery fabrics manufacturer David Rothschild Co. here, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 88.
Rothschild was involved in the furniture industry for more than 60 years.
He served in the Army as an officer on Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's staff during World War II. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1947 and briefly practiced law.
He then joined the family's textile business, founded in 1886, and had a long career in sales and management. David Rothschild Co. is currently under fourth-generation family management with Walter Rothschild as president.
David Rothschild II served on the Columbus, Ga., school board for many years and did volunteer work for education and other community service until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children and three grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Irwin Rothschild of Los Angeles, who retired recently after a 62-year career in fabric sales.
The funeral was Thursday at Temple Israel, with a brief ceremony afterward at Riverdale Cemetery.
George Edward Smead, Texas retailer
MIDLAND, Texas — George Edward Smead, a furniture retailer in Texas for more than 40 years, has died at age 87.
Smead joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and later transferred to the infantry. He was discharged in 1946 and two years later, he and his wife, Mildred, opened Ideal Furniture Co. in Kermit, Texas, which they ran for 22 years. The couple later moved to Midland and opened Aladdin House Furniture, which they operated until their retirement in 1991.
Ed Smead was a past president of the Texas Furniture Assn. and spent 10 years on the board of directors of the National Home Furnishings Assn.
He is survived by his wife, a son, five grandchildren and two nephews.
James P. 'Jim' Hicks, veteran sales rep
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Veteran sales representative James P. “Jim” Hicks has died following a battle with cancer. He was 66.
Hicks had worked in the furniture industry for nearly 40 years in a variety of sales and sales management positions. Most recently, he was a sales representative for leather supplier Zenda Leather.
Survivors include two children and six grandchildren.

Alan G. Engstrom, longtime sales rep
PITTSBURGH — Alan G. Engstrom, a longtime sales representative, has died of complications from a stroke. He was 91.
Engstrom began his career as an appliance salesman. He spent the last 20 years of his career as a sales rep in the home furnishings industry, most recently with Woodcrest.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Light of Life Mission or the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.
