Showtime fabric fair to feature Oz-inspired trend event

Other special events include ‘Life After China' discussion

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 20, 2009

HIGH POINT — A number of events are planned for the Showtime fabric fair here Dec. 6 to 9, including a special trend presentation.

The first-time event is "Amazed: A visit to Ahhs," a 4,000-foot trend installation inspired by the 70th anniversary of the classic film "The Wizard of Oz." Created by designer Mike Farrell, the display features iconic images and witty, surprising materials to illustrate the value of change and irony.

Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. is sponsoring the presentation, which also will incorporate Showtime's traditional Trend Bank and Eco-Trend Bank.

Breakfast at Showtime, a panel discussion of industry issues, this market will focus on "Life After China: The Western Business Equation Changes Again." The session will be held from 7 to 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7. Panelists include Zack Taylor, vice president of sales and marketing for Valdese Weavers; Bob Choppa, vice president, Lexington Furniture; Charles Adams, chief sales officer, Victory Group; Jason Carr, principal, Softline; and Jane Roberts, director of upholstery manufacturing for Thomasville Furniture.

Seating is limited and reservations can be made by contacting Eric Schneider, the moderator, at (917) 251-9922 or eric@sipco.net.

Designer Jane Matteson and trend forecaster Ellen Gefen also will make presentations during Showtime. Matteson's talk, "Fashion to Frame: Interpreting the Trend for Maximum Sell-Through" is slated for 10 a.m. on Dec. 7 and 1 p.m. on Dec. 8. Gefen's presentation, "Trendspotting," is set for 1 p.m. Dec. 7 and 10 a.m. Dec. 8.

Social events include a Sunday night celebration of Showtime's 40th anniversary, to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 6 at The Factory at Market Square; an industry mixer on Dec. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Factory; and "Get Twisted in the Land of Ahhs," a gathering in the Suites at Market Square on Dec. 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
