SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Seena Magowitz Golf Classic will offer some big prizes to attendees at the Dec. 4-5 events, organizers announced.A 2010 Volkswagen Golf valued at $17,000 is one of the featured items at the live auction, set for Dec. 5. All proceeds from the auction will go toward pancreatic cancer research.
The winning bidder can pick the car from their nearest Volkswagen dealership. Jason Kuhn of Kuhn Volkswagen is donating the car.
Roger and Jeanne Magowitz of Mattress Discounters, Virginia Beach, Va., are donating a 1.01-carat princess cut diamond appraised at $5,500 to a fund-raising toast to be held during the major sponsor dinner on Dec. 4. One hundred glasses of champagne will be sold at that event for $100 per glass. The glass may contain a diamond look-alike, or the real diamond.
"These prizes and special events offer unique ways for the home furnishings industry to support the fight against pancreatic cancer," said Roger Magowitz, who organized the event with his mattress retail friend, Ray Bojanowski. The event honors the memory of Seena Magowitz, Roger's mother, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer.
Magowitz and Bojanowski said this year's event, to be held at the Westin Kierland resort here, should be the biggest ever. The golf event, the centerpiece of the two days of activities, is already sold out at 216 golfers.
The weekend begins with the major sponsor dinner, set for the Trailblazer Terrace at the Kierland. Sponsors including Tempur-Pedic, Protect-A-Bed, Symbol, Sealy, International Bedding and Mattress Firm, among many others, will be recognized. Jazz artist Jesse McGuire will perform and the evening will also include a Casino Night, sponsored by Tempur-Pedic.
The golf event starts at 8:15 Saturday morning at the Westin Kierland Golf Club.
Events for non-golfers include a private tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West complex and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Arizona Diamondbacks operation at Chase Field.
The awards luncheon is set for 2 p.m. Saturday. Jai Pausch, the widow of "The Last Lecture" author Randy Pausch, will be the honorary chair of that event. Noted cancer research Dr. Daniel Von Hoff will be one of the featured speakers.
The Seena Magowitz Golf Classic has raised more than $1 million for pancreatic cancer research since it was first held in 2003.
