Toronto market grows
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, December 17, 2006
Toronto — The upcoming January market here will showcase nearly 400 exhibitors, including about 85 that are new or will be returning to this country's only major furniture market.
The Canadian Home Furnishings Market, owned and organized by the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn., will celebrate its 35th anniversary with its Jan. 13–16 run at the International Center here.
Among the companies set to return are casual dining producer Dinec, case goods maker Collection Tuff Avenue, upholstery house Edgewood, and importer R&T Furniture. First-time exhibitors include Mega Furniture Imports, Coast to Coast Furnishings, Leather Craft and Van Gogh Designs.
The market will occupy almost 700,000 square feet of display space, with over 70 permanent and outlying showrooms.
The four-day event will be preceded by a Kick-Off Cocktail Party at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan 12, at the entrance to the International Center's Hall 1. The party is sponsored by Furniture/Today.
This year's Trends Display will be unveiled at a reception on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. The designer-created displays feature product available at the show and aim to give dealers ideas for showing furniture on their floors.
On Sunday, Jan. 14, the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn. will present the 2007 Canadian Home Furnishings Awards, honor winners of the first-ever Retailers Choice Awards, and salute this year's recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The gala dinner will be held at the nearby Pearson Convention Center, beginning at 6 p.m.
For many small and midsized family-owned Canadian stores, the Toronto market is the major opportunity to see new product, since they rarely attend shows in High Point or Las Vegas. Conversely, for a number of Canadian furniture and bedding resources, the CHFM is their only platform for launching products and programs.
In 2006, only one regional market was held in Canada — the Toronto Summer Furniture Show in August, organized by the OFMA. Events in Calgary, Alberta, and Quebec City were put on hiatus.
Factory association Furniture West said last week it will hold an event June 23–25 at the Roundup Center in Calgary, but didn't divulge details. Neither the organizers of the Toronto summer market nor the Quebec City show, previously held in September, have announced their intentions for 2007.
