Master Bedroom in furniture stores

  • Accounted for 11% of furniture store sales in 2008.
  • Accounted for 12% of selling space in furniture stores in 2008.
  • Median SKUs, 20, and median number of lines.
  • Median best-selling price point, $1,199.

Master Bedroom style trends

  • Contemporary styles captured the biggest chunk of market share in terms of units, 35%, at low price points ($999 and below for a bed, dresser, mirror and chest, retail).
  • Contemporary, 25% and Other Traditional, 24%, were the market share leaders at middle price points ($1,000 to $2,999 for a bed, dresser, mirror and chest, retail).
  • At high price points, $3,000 and above (for a bed, dresser, mirror and chest, retail) Other Traditional claimed 30% of unit market share, with European Country, 24%, running a close second.
  • As for the fastest-growing individual style, Casual contemporary came in as the leader across-the-boards at all price points.
  • Retailers asserted that oak, cherry and pine were their best-selling wood or finish at low price points. Cherry and oak were also among the best-selling at middle price points. At high price points, cherry claimed the top spot with mahogany and oak as distance seconds.
  • Features in master bedroom that retailers felt were gaining favor with consumers included nickel, pewter hardware, TV-compatible dresser/chests and platform beds. Features losing consumers' favor were wall-bed systems, bookcase headboards and brass hardware.
